A constant infusion of coffee is a requirement when there are only a few hours to work ahead of a major deadline or looming exam. And when the stir-craziness sets in after hours of studying, getting out of the house and parking at one of Dallas’ best coffee shops is a smart change of scenery.
Sadly, too many coffee shops are too noisy or offer sketchy Wi-Fi, making them not ideal. Every spot on this map serves up a safe place with good eats, plenty of caffeine, and, in some cases, sweets or boozy libations as a reward.
B-Side Coffee
This is among the most roomy coffee shops in town and it offers proper tables to set up on if that’s the vibe, or couches to lounge at if it’s a more relaxed day. There may be someone letting their kids play in the back corner or someone putting on some vinyl in the dining room — the crowd can be all over the place, so come expecting the unexpected. In addition to coffee drinks, it serves baked goods and breakfast and lunch sandwiches.

Slow and Steady Coffee
This coffee shop in a converted house is so very cool, with its midcentury modern furnishings and rambling space. It serves its own beans, which are roasted in the neighborhood (that’s Oak Cliff), and with multiple rooms open to pick your perch, it’s easy to catch the right vibe. The team here likes to get creative with the seasonal specials, and this is easily one of the most interesting coffee menus in town. Look for drinks like the L.A. Mood (house-made horchata topped with a double shot of espresso) or the spiced pear chai. There are also light bakery-style bites and seating outside for when the weather is right.

The Wild Detectives
The Wild Detectives is a fabulous bookstore, but it also serves beverages and snacks such as cheese boards and toasts to help fuel essential studies. This spot also serves good cocktails and a solid wine list, but fair warning: the Wi-Fi is turned off on the weekends. You’ll find all sorts of folks parked with laptops and books during work days, but it can get nosy so bring headphones if you need to go heads down in deep work.

Full City Rooster
Head to the back room loaded with a mish-mash of tables at this joint for a homey vibe to work in with coffee, cold brew, or breakfast tacos. On nice days, there is also a patio out back that’s open. This is a community gathering spot as well as a coffee shop, so it can get chatty. It also serves what is among the top cups of coffee in the city. Street parking is ample if the little lot doesn’t have anything left.

Otto’s Coffee & Fine Foods
Step into a 19th-century-inspired library space with this coffee shop inside the Adolphus Hotel in Downtown Dallas. It’s all heavy wood with big windows onto the busy streets outside and giant bakery counters. The seats are plush leather things to sit down in and never get up from. There are long communal tables and booths to sit at as well. It serves coffee drinks, chai, and a London fog tea in homage to that portrait of Queen Elizabeth in the lobby from her stay in the ‘70s. There are also breakfast sandwiches, breakfast tacos, and grab-and-go options at lunchtime.

Magnolias Sous Le Pont
This is the kind of coffee shop that actively encourages folks to stay awhile, whether to have a meeting, work, sit and read, or sip as much coffee as they like. It can be a little loud, so it’s not necessarily ideal for focus work, but if the hustle and bustle fuels you, then it’s a great place to land.

Katy Coffee Lab
Light woods, lots of light, and a zen philosophy make this coffee lab a place to lean into focus work. It’s got Danish tables and slouchy couches, so laptop workers and folks who need to bang it out on an iPhone or want to have a quick coffee meeting have options.

Wayward Coffee Co.
The Design District outpost of this two-location shop is particularly good for working. It’s big, airy, and white, with ambient music and the clattering of dishware. It serves Cat & Cloud beans for all its coffee drinks, plus tea and chai. There are some light bakery-style bites to nosh on but it’s far more focused on the coffee. There are private rooms in the back that can be reserved as needed.

Houndstooth Coffee
This tiny spot has what is hands down some of the best coffee in Dallas, so if it is where you plan to park try to do so for only part of the day — other folks need to scoot in for a cuppa too. That said, the Henderson Avenue outpost is a chill spot to work, with exposed brick walls and distinctive turquoise blue stools. This is strictly a fuel up and put your head down to work spot — the bites are minimal. That said, picking up a bag of beans to take home is highly recommended.

Halcyon
This Greenville Avenue spot is usually loaded up with laptop warriors sipping on coffee, so rest assured that it won’t be loud, and everyone is well-versed in the etiquette of co-working. It also serves some of the best coffee (and cocktails when the afternoon drags on) around. It brews with Katz Coffee out of Houston and has a food menu that covers breakfast with skillets, sandwiches, and pancakes, plus lunch options of salad, sandwiches, flatbreads, and bowls.

Well Grounded Coffee Community
This Casa Linda coffee shop offers tables perfect for setting up a laptop and drinking a strong cup of coffee from Full City Rooster, which selects from environmentally conscious growers, as well as some options for light bites. It hires women through the Dignity Project and trains them in the skills of being a barista and the ins and outs of running a business. The shop has a down-home vibe, with library-esque furniture (that means: not trendy, not fancy). It also has a large private room for meetings.

Ascension Coffee – White Rock
Ascension is a coffee and wine bar, so if the studying gets a little stressful, switch to a glass of red or white. Comfy booths, free Wi-Fi, and cozy surroundings make all of Ascension’s locations excellent spots to get a lot of work done, although it can get chatty in some places, so bring headphones if you need them. It’s also a solid spot to order a full breakfast, with sandwiches, bagels, yogurts, bowls of hash, and lunch. Oh, and most locations have a dog-friendly patio in case Fido needs to come along as moral support.

East Dallas Middle Ground
It’s the vintage sign declaring in script that this is a “coffee shop” (tiny light bulbs drive it and is from 1948) to the floor-to-ceiling windows that let all of the East Dallas light in, this spot is set to welcome the neighborhood and all its visitors. The staff actively wants to know who you are and what your deal is, so pull up a stool at the counter or grab a table and have a yap when you place that coffee order and ask for the Wi-Fi password. It also offers private work rooms that can be booked for whatever. It grinds beans from Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters, along with teas and matchas plus breakfast bites ranging from items from Starship bagel to breakfast tacos.

Sugar & Sage Bakery
Order a cup of Noble Coyote Coffee, a sweet treat or a sandwich, and dig into that pile of work in this Highland Park bakery. The well-appointed interiors are second only to the lovely outdoor patio here, where several tables for two (or one) dot the front windows while patio tables await outside. This Park Cities spot, owned by a mother and daughter duo, is a little oasis in a strip mall off the toll road and well-liked for its menu of inventive sweet treats.
