The Best Bowls of Soup in Dallas | Dallas Food

Sweater weather and soup season are among the best weather-based times of year. After a punishingly hot “summer season” from around May to October, Dallasites are ready to dive into a steaming hot bowl of something spoon-worthy.

Whether it’s brothy with noodles, spicy, creamy or meaty, the soups at these establishments will hit the spot.

Fearing’s

Chef Dean Fearing’s famous soup is often imitated but never duplicated. The smoky, spicy soup arrives as a mound of diced avocado, smoked chicken, radishes, and crunchy tortilla strips, and then a server adds steaming hot broth to the bowl.

Las Palmas Tex-Mex

Las Palmas’ thick, tomato-based version features chicken tinga, queso fresco, avocado, cilantro, crispy tortilla, pico de gallo, and crema served in a large bowl with the broth poured tableside.

Bangkok City

Some judge Thai restaurants by their version of pad thai, but we’d argue a sip of the restaurant’s tom kha gai will tell you everything. Bangkok’s version of the sweet and sour coconut chicken soup is excellent when served in a large-format hot pot, perfect for sharing.

St. Martin’s Wine Bistro

The recipe for Champagne brie soup at St. Martin’s Wine Bistro in East Dallas is a well-kept secret, but chef Bobby Weddle let us know that it involves a mélange of brie, sparkling wine, chicken stock, and cream.

Beverley’s Dallas

The menu at Beverley’s has no shortage of dishes that would likely make the restaurant’s namesake, Beverley, a very proud Jewish mother. The matzo ball soup is no different. The elevated take on a staple features a single matzo ball surrounded by a chicken broth accompanied by carrots, celery, and dill.

The Porch

Using a traditional preparation, the Porch executes this well-known dish with finesse. The creamy, rich tomato soup topped with parmesan breadcrumbs and sprinkled with fresh parsley tastes delicious on its own but is best enjoyed alongside the restaurant’s famously decadent grilled cheese sandwich.

Georgie

At the Michelin-recommended spot on Travis Street, chef RJ Yoakum has created a French onion soup that’s anything but traditional. The bowl of foam is topped tableside by steaming hot onion broth.

Hello Dumpling

Looking at the beautiful swirls of super thin noodles, zucchini, and carrots, it becomes clear that the version of this noodle soup served at Hello Dumpling is no typical noodle soup. The broth is rich and delicately seasoned, and the beef inside maintains a tender texture despite being thinly sliced.

Kostas Cafe

Avgolemono is a comforting soup featuring chicken, rice or orzo, rich egg broth, and a bright squeeze of lemon. A healing dish that’s a staple at many Greek restaurants, there’s something about the creamy simplicity of the bowl at Kostas on upper Greenville Avenue that rises to the iconic level. Served with crusty bread, it’s chicken soup for the Greek soul.

Rise Soufflé

The mini cheese souffles resembling marshmallows give this cult favorite tomato and red pepper soup its name. A few years ago, the owners of Rise tried to take its popular soup off the menu. After customers threatened to riot, marshmallow soup returned.

Jose

Fans of this soup already know about the carrot habanero soup at Jose on Lovers, and they wait all year for the seasonal special to emerge. The heat from the habaneros is mellowed by velvety coconut milk, while a pepita pesto adds texture.

Standard Service

Chili served in Texas containing not one, not two, but three varieties of beans could start a bar fight, but luckily, the bowl of red served at the Standard Service in Heath can hold its own. Topped with cheddar cheese and green onion, it might just convince someone on “Team No Beans” to change their mind.

Tolbert’s Restaurant

The long-time chili champ is still Tolbert’s in Grapevine for Texans who cannot allow beans in their chili. “The world’s best chili” is served at this rustic, brick-walled chili parlor on Main Street. The cups and bowls of red here are a deep brown and topped with diced white onion, shredded cheddar and a whole serrano pepper — for the brave.

Deli News

The matzo ball soup at this iconic Jewish deli is an absolute must for folks trying to treat or stave off the flu. Hungry for something a little different? Go for the chicken hodgepodge, including a perfectly fluffy matzo ball, some egg noodles, and kreplach (boiled dumplings).
